Turn a Hot Wheels car over: many bases carry a short code – one letter and two digits, such as T31, sometimes with a third letter (U02A). Our sources list this code for 2,029 releases, 4,012 codes in total, and never explain it. So we counted every single one.
Where the code sits – and where ours come from
The code is stamped into the base of the car, usually near the line with the country of manufacture. In our database it stands in the Notes row of the spec sheet, word for word as our source writes it: “Base code(s): T31”. A few releases say “Date code(s)” instead – it is the same field. The codes themselves come from the Hot Wheels Wiki (CC BY-SA 3.0, see sources). The wiki gives the codes, not their meaning.
Our reading – this part is ours, not the wiki’s
Everything in this section is our own interpretation. There is no key from Mattel in our sources, so we worked one out from the data – and we say so on every page that shows it.
- The letter is the year the car was pressed. The letters run through the alphabet, skipping I, O and Q.
- The two digits are the week inside that year, 01 to 52.
- A third letter sits on 1,014 codes and only from 2023 onwards (A 893×, I 111×, N 10×). We do not know what it stands for, so we do not guess.
Why we read it that way: three counts
- The letter. V sits only on cars of 2026. Counting backwards through the alphabet without I, O and Q gives B = 2009. With that table 75.3 % of all 4,012 codes fall exactly on the model year on the card, and all but two fall within one year of it.
- The digits. Not one of the 4,012 digit pairs lies outside 01–52, and every one of the 52 possible values occurs, between 43 and 113 times each.
- Why “week” and not just “a number”. Late codes belong to the next model year. Of the codes from weeks 01–36 only 1.4 % sit on a car of the following model year; from weeks 37–52 it is 70.4 %. That is what a calendar looks like – production for the next line starts in autumn. A number without a time meaning could not behave like that.
It stays a reading, not a document. We keep it apart from what our source says and we label it as ours wherever it appears.
Letter by letter, with the count behind every row
| Letter | Our reading | Codes counted | Weeks seen |
|---|---|---|---|
| B | 2009 | 4 | 33–52 |
| C | 2010 | 37 | 3–52 |
| D | 2011 | 25 | 8–51 |
| E | 2012 | 84 | 11–52 |
| F | 2013 | 100 | 1–51 |
| G | 2014 | 106 | 1–50 |
| H | 2015 | 80 | 5–52 |
| J | 2016 | 130 | 4–52 |
| K | 2017 | 115 | 3–50 |
| L | 2018 | 195 | 1–51 |
| M | 2019 | 264 | 1–52 |
| N | 2020 | 263 | 1–52 |
| P | 2021 | 261 | 1–50 |
| R | 2022 | 321 | 2–51 |
| S | 2023 | 440 | 1–51 |
| T | 2024 | 657 | 1–52 |
| U | 2025 | 618 | 2–52 |
| V | 2026 | 312 | 1–32 |
The oldest letters rest on very little material – B has just 4 codes – so treat the first rows with care. I, O and Q never appear in the first position; the letter I does appear as the third character, 111 times.
Read your own code
One letter, two digits. Nothing leaves your device – the answer is worked out in your browser.
What we cannot tell you
- What the third letter means. It only shows up from 2023 and we have no evidence either way.
- Whether Mattel calls it a week. Our three counts fit a calendar week; that is as far as the data goes.
- A code can also be younger than the car: 55 codes sit on a release of an earlier model year – later production of the same car. 111 releases carry codes from more than one year.
- What a car is worth. We publish no values and no price advice, here or anywhere on this site.
Cars from before 2010
In our data not one release with a model year before 2010 carries such a code. For older cars the spec sheet gives what our source does record: the base itself and the country of manufacture. A year cast into an older base is a copyright year of the casting, not the week your car left the machine. Start from all years or look the car up in the database.
Which cars carry a code at all
All 2,029 releases with a code belong to premium lines – Pop Culture 529, Car Culture 522, Team Transport 216, Boulevard 196, Fast & Furious Premium 161 and others. For mainline cars our sources record no base code at all. Related: case letters and Hot Wheels 2027 cases. We open fresh cars every week on our YouTube channel.
